Asymmetrical Reconciliation with Andrea Hiott and Iain McGilchrist
Relative to Dr McGilchrist's work, in this video we discuss the coincidence of opposites, William Blake's ladder as a spiral and its significance. We explore flow as asymmetry & the whirlpool of unity that is existence. We ultimately relate this to the power of poetry to touch us in wholeness without saying oppositions directly--we discuss his poetry series during Covid and the beautiful first and last poems of that series by the wonderful Kathleen Raine.
It becomes a very moving and powerful conversation and I am very thankful for it.
About Andrea Hiott: Andrea is a philosopher and advises various organizations such as Holon Labs and the Active Inference Institute. She is an author of numerous books linking mind and movement, and has long worked in areas of mobility. She is part of the Ecological Motoring Initiative, an organization which tries to imagine what forms of motoring and movement can meet the needs of the living planet within its means. She did her undergraduate work on Hegel and David Bohm. She has a Master degree in Neuroscience and her PhD is on Way-making, a new philosophy of mind. She is also the host of the Love & Philosophy series, Beyond Dichotomy, Forever Motoring, and the Desirable Unknown.
This engaging conversation delves deep into the philosophical and neurological exploration of asymmetry, flow, and the unity within the diversity of existence. Through the metaphor of a whirlpool, the intricate dance between differentiation and integration within consciousness and existence is discussed. Beginning with the enchanting metaphor of a whirlpool as emblematic of life's flow and transient nature, participants ponder how limitations and resistances give birth to beauty and form, tying this seamlessly to human existence. They explore the significance of asymmetry in the brain, the importance of intuition, imagination, and the dangers of a narcissistically driven society dominated by left-hemisphere thinking. The discussion touches on themes of poetry, nature, the sacred, and ultimately, the interconnectedness of life, suggesting that recognizing and embracing these connections enriches our understanding and experience of the world. The conversation sensitively concludes with reflections on life, death, and the perpetual influence of our existence on the flow of the universal consciousness.

A Medicine More Fit for Humanity - 2024 John P McGovern Lecture, Duke University, USA

We live in an age in which we cede more and more of life to machines, raising questions for the practice of medicine. - What is the calling of medicine? - Is it not to heal human beings? But what does it mean to heal? - Is a human being just a body? - Is the body just a machine? - Is a doctor just a mechanic? - Can machines substitute for human skill? - Can they erode human skill? - How should ...

How hemisphere theory helps us understand the metacrisis It is often remarked that though it may seem that we face numerous global crises of different kinds - environmental, social, political, cultural, economic, psychological, and so on - these crises are interrelated. If bureaucracy is the bane of civilization then perhaps you could revisit Donald trumps policies. Like orban in Hungary he is much attacked but never over anything of substance. Trump removed more bureaucracy from American government than all previous presidents combined. His policy as president and now in his campaign is to continue his policy of removing 7 regulations for every 1 new regulation added.

I noticed Ian thinks excess bureaucracy is the end of civilization. A central part of Donald trumps presidency before and his campaign now is that for every new regulation proposed, 7 must be removed. As a result trump removed more bureaucracy from America than all other president combined. Still a long way to go.

Three TOTAL geniuses, just descended from olympus, discussing and deciding the future of THE HUMANITY, without a shred of irony. If I am not wrong, all the problems that you mentioned, were also okayed by a small set of "geniuses", who, for their own reasons escalated the everything that modernity had to offer, for money and material prosperity. And the bearded guy is just presenting pseudo-intellectual word salads, which I suppose is intended to present him as a TOTAL genius!? God bless the internet, for the first time in human history, we have more geniuses and experts than laymen. Each one of them is freshly descended from olympus, with fresh, original, ingenious and creative ideas to share, not at all word salads filled with ad-hoc analysis and cliches. This isn't a problem of humanity, this is a problem of western capitalism, and the west constitutes just 20% of the human population. I can't fathom why would you talk in terms of "THE HUMANITY", "HUMAN CIVILIZATION", "HUMAN NATURE", "OUR", "US", while it is all just western categories, western abstractions, western perspectives, western problems and Western solutions. Last time I remember, no one here did agree with you in the first place. Most of the problems will go away, only the west could keep its weapons and "intellectual" shenanigans inside its own shores.

Dr. McGilchrist I turn on a lecture or talk and begin my chores. Please consider having fewer ads? UA-cam has no qualms with presenting 20 and 30 minute infomercials imbedded in your content. If you place ads at the end, I will make the conscious effort to always like and comment while those commercials play which will benefit you and leave my work gloves on my hands. It would be a shame if the cost to listen to you became so feet in units of time as to be unaffordable. I am often slinging my scythe. Stopping interrupts fodder collection. At these prices, your books must cost quite a bit in bills if that tag is comparable to the cost in minutes! Thanks!

The right brain is always thinking of life, things and events as concrete ideas. While the Right brain is always trying to conceive them as Subjective Experiences of immaterial Value. This awareness is everything. It makes me think about the saying by Jesus: MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT COMES FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD. Man the duo, one needing a material EX-istence[bread] whereas the other aspect needs the subjective IN-spiration of the divine truth that underlies every single manifestation of reality.... Much more can be said but we forebear.

We will probably eventually realize that all is consciousness as fundamental with mind emerging with quantum events and matter formed out of vibration at different rates. Talking about right brainism to left brained humans will not enable them to step into uncertainty. There is a left brained fear complex that prevents them from stepping forward and so is suffering 'the great christian belief' the only way for left brained people to explore a life of wonder?

Ian s paper which he read on the future of university was absolutely brilliant. But the comments were turned off?? He should address at some point in his unique career the history of the British Empire and its “Legacy of Violence”, the recent book by Harvard professor Caroline Elkins. Most importantly, her analysis to “the corridors of power” between Oxford U and Whitehall expose the utter corruption, horrors, brutalities, and genocidal insanities of Empire fueled at Oxford University and its graduates. The current atheism of Dawkins, for example, a left brained egoist who sounds like the irrational megalomaniacs of Empire building, should be understood in the history of the colleges at Oxford. In truth, the Dawkins atheism is another form of intellectual imperialism and colonialism of the mind akin to the aggression and viciousness of Oxford and the East India Company for over 400 years. Ian should take on this critical history in the context of University. U University

I'm only 42 minutes in, so perhaps the heavily dualistic and highly reminiscence-thirsty gentlemen to the right and left of Mr Schmachtenber can recognize the great fortune they'd been experiencing by having been invited to speak with Mr Schmachtenbergermor, who seems to enjoy the great fortune of a thinking process not-so-tightly-bound to duality. Pay attention, gentlemen, and the same old kinds of laments that are rhyming with the laments of all former human civilizations who failed to resolve accurately, and thus collapsing, might not seem so insurmountable and sound so separate and rhetorical. Something tells me Daniel will eventually state some of his wordsmith masterpieces that tend to alert any old fuddy duddies that he's no lightweight in the genuine critical thinking milieu. Much love ❤

This is a perfect expression of how psychology and medicine is coming together to help humanity understand our fallen state and what we as individuals and society can all do to help heal our psychic and moral wounds and wrong development. Ian’s brilliant analysis of the functions of each hemisphere of the Brain offers a new way of looking at mankind’s fundamental problems, often now called “the Meta Crisis “and thus help us to better understand how to heal and remedy these many problems humanity faces. He talks about the use of the attention and to help free us from our habitual or mechanical forms of living that are leading to so many problems that are now being called a crisis due to the deviation that will ensue if the problems are not seriously address. This lecture reminds me how badly I have got to get make to reading again. Time is slipping by and we each have much that needs to be studied and understood. We are here to perform a specific work on ourselves and for the world. We each have got to do our parts if the world is not going to fly to pieces. We have to stop waisting time and “make hay while the sun still shines bc the night comes when no one will be able to work” as our master so wisely said and warned.
